Choosing The Right MCSA Training - Insights
For anyone interested in an MCSA (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator) study program, you should know that training varies from company to company; and you’ll relate to some more than others. You will be able to choose from a range of courses, both if you’re new to network support, or an IT professional looking to gain acknowledged certifications. Find a training provider that’s happy to take the time to get to know you, and will help identify the best route for you, even before they start thinking about which course. You can also expect them to be able to advise you where to start dependent on your current comprehension or lack of it.
A competent and professional advisor (vs a salesperson) will cover in some detail your abilities and experience. This is useful for calculating your study start-point. With a strong background, or maybe some real-world experience (some certifications gained previously perhaps?) then it’s likely your starting point will be quite dissimilar from someone who is just starting out. Working through a basic PC skills module first may be the ideal way to get up and running on your computer programme, but really depends on your level of familiarity with computers.
Be careful that the exams you’re working towards will be commercially viable and are current. Training companies own certificates are not normally useful in gaining employment. Unless your qualification is issued by a conglomerate such as Microsoft, CompTIA, Cisco or Adobe, then you’ll probably find it will have been a waste of time - as it’ll be an unknown commodity.
Several companies offer a Job Placement Assistance service, to assist your search for your first position. With the huge skills shortage in this country right now, it’s not too important to become overly impressed with this service however. It isn’t such a complex operation to secure the right work once you’re well trained and qualified.
Update your CV at the beginning of your training though (advice can be sought on this via your provider). Don’t delay till you’ve finished your exams. Getting onto the ‘maybe’ pile of CV’s is far better than not even being known about. A decent number of junior positions are offered to students who are still at an early stage in their studies. The most reliable organisations to help get you placed are most often specialist locally based employment services. As they will get paid by the employer when they’ve placed you, they’ll work that much harder to get a result.
Various men and women, it seems, spend evenings and weekends on their training and studies (sometimes for years), only to do nothing special when trying to get their first job. Introduce yourself… Make an effort to get in front of employers. A job isn’t just going to bump into you.
We’d hazard a guess that you’re a practical sort of person - the ‘hands-on’ individual. If you’re like us, the unfortunate chore of reading reference guides is something you’ll force on yourself if you absolutely have to, but it doesn’t suit your way of doing things. Consider interactive, multimedia study if learning from books is not your thing. Research has consistently shown that an ‘involved’ approach to study, where we utilise all our senses, is proven to produce longer-lasting and deeper memory retention.
Study programs now come via DVD-ROM discs, so everything is learned directly from your own PC. Using video-streaming, you are able to see your instructors showing you how it’s all done, followed by your chance to practice - in an interactive lab. You really need to look at courseware examples from your chosen company. It’s essential they incorporate video, demonstrations and various interactive elements.
It’s folly to go for purely on-line training. Because of the variable quality and reliability of most broadband providers, you should always obtain CD or DVD ROM based materials.
